Utopia is a small community west of Barrie and about 28 km. northwest of Innisfil. A small group of volunteers there who call themselves the Happy Hens of Utopia is raising money to restore a local grist mill. They hope to raise awareness through this project of “buying local, growing your own and thinking greener”.
If successfully restored, the grist mill may become a hub of activity encouraging projects in local self-sufficiency and sustainability. To raise money toward that goal, the Happy Hens are organizing a first annual Seedy Saturday on March 2, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Utopia Hall, 8396 – 6th Line of Utopia.
Admission is free. The following will be available to visitors:
- Gardening and growing related displays starting at 9:00 a.m.
- Seed and bulb exchange from 10-11:00 a.m.
- Lunch (soup, salad, fresh-baked bread) from noon – 2:00 p.m.
You’re invited to drop by and help the Happy Hens of Utopia raise some money, learn more about their project, swap seeds or bulbs and enjoy a light meal while you chat with fellow gardeners.
